When is the Best Time to Fish for Bluefin Tuna in the Strait of Gibraltar?

One of the most frequent questions we receive at Tuna Fishing Xperience is: “When is the best time to come fish for Bluefin Tuna?” While the Strait of Gibraltar offers opportunities for much of the year thanks to its strategic location, there are key periods when the chances of encountering and battling these giants significantly increase. Understanding the Bluefin Tuna’s migratory cycle is fundamental.

The Bluefin Cycle: Key Seasons in the Strait

Spring (April – June): The Great Migration to the Mediterranean

For many, this is the peak moment. Large schools of adult Bluefin Tuna, mostly large specimens, pass through the Strait from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean to spawn. They are concentrated, and their passage is relatively predictable. This is the ideal season to target the largest specimens (giant tuna) using techniques like trolling or chumming with live bait.

  • Advantages: High concentration of large fish, predictable passage.
  • Considerations: Weather can be variable, specific seasonal regulations may apply.

Summer (July – August): Post-Spawn Feeding

After spawning in the Mediterranean (mainly around the Balearic Islands), many tuna remain in the area or begin heading back towards the Atlantic, actively seeking food to regain strength. Although perhaps not as concentrated as in spring, activity can be intense, especially with techniques like spinning or popping if “bird plays” (seabirds indicating surface activity) are located. Specimens of various sizes can also be found.

  • Advantages: Usually good weather, active fish looking for food.
  • Considerations: Fish might be more dispersed, intense heat.

Autumn (September – October): The Return Journey

Similar to spring, but in the opposite direction. Tuna returning to the Atlantic pass through the Strait again, often feeding voraciously before facing colder waters. This is another excellent opportunity to catch large specimens. Weather conditions are often pleasant in early autumn.

  • Advantages: Large, active fish, less boat pressure than in mid-summer.
  • Considerations: Weather can start to become more unstable towards the end of October.

Additional Factors to Consider

Beyond the general season, daily success can depend on:

  • Weather Conditions: Wind (especially the easterly Levante), waves, and atmospheric pressure influence fish behavior and boating safety.
  • Moon Phases: Some anglers believe moon phases (especially full and new moons) affect feeding activity.
  • Current Regulations: Quotas and possible temporary closures are crucial. We always fish in compliance with regulations.
